Once you get a blog article in the Google top ten, how do you keep it from dropping out?

keep it fresh+classic with regular link referrals to it. one ref link per week/month - it all depends on the competition. The trick is (from my personal observations that just might be wrong) that every time when the bot follows a new link towards your blog entry it goes up.

Good keywords for the blog searches help, too. But yeah, the biggest push is inbound links.

it is depend on your back links. post most articles and create back links related to your keywords.
