i wouldn't try toothpaste, it could scratch the disc. See if there are any scratches on it, if there are, you should try something else, it could be broken. You could always get a used one

I had the same problem with my Oblivion disc. There were no marks or smudges and it wouldn't read the disc. I switched it out for a new one and it worked good for a while and then started giving the disc read error again. I don't know if it has something to do with the Xbox or what. The toothpaste trick worked on a scratch I had on another game that was causing it to freeze whenever I went to a certain map but be careful what kind of toothpaste you use because if it's too abrasive it will make lots of little scratches.
