Need-to-Know Real Estate Exam Tips and Strategies

Be methodical
READ every word of every question and consider all of the choices before you mark your answer. Most errors are made when the correct answer is the last choice. Too many people mark the first answer that seems correct without reading all of them to find out which is best.

Do not panic
The real estate license exam is not a competitive exam. You don't have to do better than your neighbor, and you don't need to score 100. You want to pass and you want to do well, but a few wrong answers will not hurt you.

If you don't know, guess
If you do not know the answer, eliminate those that you know are wrong and guess, even if you have no idea. Since there is no penalty for a wrong answer, even a wild guess gives you a 25 percent chance to be right. If you leave the space blank, you have no chance at all.

Mark your answers unambiguously, according to instructions
Mark only one answer for each question, even if you think that more than one is correct. If you mark more than one answer, the scoring machine will consider you wrong.

If you change your mind, change your answer accordingly
On a paper-and-pencil test, erase completely. Leave no doubt as to which answer you mean.

Stay on track
If you are using a separate answer sheet, check often to be sure that the question number matches the answer space and that you have not skipped one by mistake. If you do slip out of line, you must go back and change your answers. The scoring machine will not read any note of explanation that you write on the answer sheet.

Answer every question
If time is about to run out and you're not done, mark all the remaining questions with the same answer. Some will probably be correct. In doing this, choose an answer other than choice (A). Choice (A) is generally the correct answer less often than the other choices.

Stay alert
Be careful not to mark a wrong answer because you were not concentrating. An example might be: The correct answer to a mathematics question is choice (B) d, and you mark choice (D) instead of choice (B).

Check and recheck
If you finish before time is up, do not daydream. Check to be sure that there is an answer-and only one answer-for every question. Return to the difficult questions and rethink them.
